Why I Love Instagram

(My first three photos on Instagram)

I remember sitting with my friend last summer while she nagged me about why I wasn’t on Instagram. ‘You’d love it’ she kept saying, ‘it’s so you, I can’t believe you’re not on it!’ But I just didn’t really understand it – which makes me sound a lot older than my 28 years I know! I had tried it before but I just didn’t know what to search for, and I’d always been too shy or nervous to ever actually post anything on any kind of social media. I loved Pinterest, but anything else seemed like you had to put yourself out there, which really just wasn’t very me.

So if you’d have told me in less than a years time I would be addicted to Instagram posting AT LEAST once a day (and I actually think I may be addicted – tell me I’m not alone here?) I just wouldn’t have believed you. This is the girl that has put all of two status updates on Facebook in about 10 years, and has only ever tweeted once to ask Oliver Bonas when they would be getting more of their amazing drinks trolleys in stock (that paid off – the drinks trolley is now mine!)

Instagram creates such a supportive and encouraging environment, every single person I have spoken to or come across on Instagram is just so bloomin’ lovely! The words of encouragement from what are essentially strangers, surprise me every time. Yes, there is a negative side to social media, but there’s also a really positive side to it! You hear so much about how bad it is for the kids of today, but I think it’s also important to recognise how GOOD it can be – for everyone.

There is absolutely no way I would ever have even contemplated starting my own Interior Design business without all the lovely comments and encouragement that I still can’t believe I get! Every single like, comment and message I get means so much to me, and I know it does to others too. I’ve lost count of the number of people I follow that have quit their jobs to follow their dreams, and I know that a lot of them feel they have Instagram and the support they receive from it to thank for having the courage to do so.

When used right, social media – and Instagram I feel in particular, is amazing. It can open doors, bring opportunities our way, widen our network of contacts and friends! It’s fantastic for small businesses – I would say at least 80% of what I buy now is as a result of having seen it on Instagram. But more important than all of those things is that it can make you feel good. Whether it’s people telling you they love your home or admire your fashion sense, or even just someone telling you how adorable they think your dog/cat/child is! Whatever it is, I think we all should have a lot of love for Insta!

P.S. I would love to hear your experiences with social media – have they all been as positive or have some of you experience a negative side? And are you all Instagram addicts like me or is there life after Instagram – should I be trying something else? Leave me a comment below :)

P.P.S This post is in no way sponsored by Instagram, although I think they should sponsor me for it :)

  1. I totally agree, I love Instagram. I think it’s a fantastic way to show your creativity and give people an insight into your life. I kind of want to call it ‘the lazy persons blog’ because you get all the fantastic pictures and the general jist of things without all the writing so if someone doesn’t want to read paragraphs of text or simply don’t have the time then Instagram is a great alternative.
